Rooted 2016 Day 2…

It was a dark and peaceful night until the gigantic SPIDER attacked the girl’s room. But no fear, Bailey and Kimmy are here! As the rest of the girls were running around, getting off the floor to avoid the ferocious spider, Bailey and Kimmy were standing about, toothbrush still in mouth, with sandals in hand, waiting to squash the spider. After a valiant battle, the two finally conquered the terrifying, humongous spider. The rest of the girls (Aryanna) were “sweating” from their eyes. We are still trying to decide if the spider was “dinner plate” sized, or just “half-dollar” size.

But wait, there is more to the story! This morning, the girls were on their way out to breakfast and the door was locked from the outside. (**cough cough, Aryanna). We messed with the door, trying to saw the iron lock off with an insurance card (Bailey’s brilliant idea), until Aryanna came to see why none of the girls showed up for breakfast and realized what she had done. After we were 10 minutes late to breakfast we had some great food and devotion. Amidst the chaos, it was fun to see God use the time to bond the girls.

On a more serious note, Haiti has been amazing. It has its own sights, sounds and smells that I hadn’t expected. Everyone on the team is getting along and we have been having a great time. We began this morning with some construction. We were digging the foundation for an elderly home. We dug two feet deep for every part. It was inspirational to see everyone on the team make others take breaks.

This afternoon was our first day of VBS. We had rotations of craft, story, and game. We are all connected to a certain number of kids (between 8-12) who we walked home. We are hoping to create a close relationship with the kids that will include trust. We are working with interpreters to talk and communicate with the kids. It was also so cool to see Sonson, a boy with special needs, on the campus at VBS. The Haitian culture usually sees the special needs community as the result of too much sin and are therefore out casted. It has been awesome to realize that God’s love does not know borders or languages.

Last night’s devotion was on the town’s influence on Voodoo and how many kids may be abused, assaulted, or even a enslaved. I have heard many times that these things are happening here, but to be working with kids that may be experiencing this has been eye opening. I pray that as we continue to work in this community, we would take our blinders off and that our hearts would break for what breaks the Father’s heart. Thanks for all your prayers and support! –Kimmy Laumann

To all my FPC family: I hope you all are enjoying this blog! Thank you for the thoughts and prayers. You all are amazing! Give the kiddos some love from Ms. Bailey!
