A Different Kind of Black Friday…

I bet many of you are exhausted right now….maybe even suffering from a black eye, broken arm, twisted ankle, or sore face from being slapped….I know those Black Friday Sales can be dangerous!

So many people have mapped out this special day – they know exactly what stores they are hitting –  and in what order –  and at what time. Some may have even spent the night tented outside – just waiting for the store to open.

Those things make me a nervous wreck – I don’t like big crowds like that. But I do remember being pregnant with the twins standing outside of Sears with my mom & sister at midnight. It was 20 degrees outside and I had sandals on with a jacket. My feet still thought they were in Haiti.

One year Jose took Magdala, Momma Gigi, & Jacques to Walmart for a special midnight opening just to experience the madness! Momma Gigi said it was like the manifestations they have in Haiti against the government – maybe even a little more dangerous! LOL!

Last night we celebrated Thanksgiving here in Haiti with our family and Miss Beth. Though much smaller this year – we were still just as thankful for those who surrounded that table. So many empty chairs this year – all around the world. But our family was intact. That’s no small miracle.

We often say Jesus is the light! He’s the light of the world! He pushes back the dark. So when I think about those who don’t know Jesus – who don’t have Him in their hearts – I just see darkness – pitch black hearts. Doesn’t mean they aren’t wonderful people or that they don’t have the most beautiful hearts…..but the light that only Jesus can bring –  is missing.

Over the last two years we’ve done two discipleship programs where we pair 20 women from our Women’s Bible Study with 20 women who don’t know Jesus. They shepherd them, pray for them, visit them in their homes, and try to be the face of Jesus to their partner. We’ve done this once in Mole & the last time in Karenage. We have seen the fruits of this program as many of the women have accepted Christ, joined our regular Bible Studies, and still attend our church services.

These programs last 2 months. Each week the ladies come to a bible study where we share about Jesus. They must attend every week. At the end of the two months – we have gifts to give them. The last two times we gave away donkeys. The ladies never knew what gift they would receive – but it was our incentive program to keep them faithful to the two months of teaching. We felt like if we could just bring them into the presence of Christ – if we could just help set-up the date – it would allow them the chance to fall in love with Him.

For this specific discipleship program –  we are not pairing up women with our Women’s Bible Study Group. Instead our core campus employees will be mentoring & pouring into these ladies. We feel like it’s our turn as leaders here on this campus –  to be Jesus in a very real way to these 20 women who live in the Mole and have no relationship with Christ.

Miss Beth will be leading this Discipleship Study every Friday at 4pm. Today she kicked off this series by speaking about Job. Afterwards the women made heart-shaped ornaments – a daily reminder of God’s love for us.  Over the next two months she will be teaching & hopefully leading these precious ladies into a relationship with Christ.

Our Black Friday wasn’t so much about getting what we wanted – but more about –  giving what was needed. It was about taking 20 hearts and bringing them into the light.

Please be praying for Miss Beth, Momma Gigi, & our staff. Please pray that God will continue to give us the words, support, and encouragement that we need – –  as ALL OF US desperately try to represent an authentic Jesus to this community.

Please be praying for each and every lady- that hardened hearts will soften, that their ears will be open to listen, and that light will begin to push back and expose the darkness. Please pray that their hearts will be open to finding Hope & Love and receiving Grace & Mercy.
