This year has been incredibly hard for our staff. It’s almost impossible to believe that we started 2024 with no access to food. The same people who sat around the table that night, laughing and eating from heaping plates, are the same ones who earlier this year had to borrow oil to make mud cookies just so their families could have something—anything—to eat. These are the same staff members who went months without payroll because the banks were closed and there was no cash to withdraw.
And yet, they still showed up. Every single day.
There was no promise of a paycheck. No guarantee that their situation would get easier. But they came, because they believe in something bigger than themselves. These are the true suffering servants—the ones who keep going, even when there’s nothing left to give.
On December 22nd, we had the honor of celebrating them.
A Meal Worth Sharing
We set the tables for 32 guests, filling every seat with the people who make this mission work—our cooks, security guards, medical staff, teachers, yard workers, program managers, pastor, and mission leaders. Though our funding has been tight, we made sure that every person left with a full stomach and a full heart. While we weren’t able to send food home this time, no one left hungry.
This meal was more than just a meal. It was a reminder that even in the hardest seasons, we lean on each other, and we make it together.
The Most Personal Secret Santa
This year, we took a different approach to our Secret Santa tradition. Back in November, each staff member drew a name, but instead of giving them money to buy a gift, we gave them something far more meaningful.
We had a collection of wooden jewelry boxes left over from our princess camp, and we turned my classroom into a mini arts-and-crafts station. Over the next few weeks, each staff member took time to personally design and decorate a wooden box for the person they had drawn. Stencils, stickers, jewels, glitter, paint, and markers—they had it all!
Two days before the party, everyone got to guess who had their name. If they guessed correctly, they won a prize. If they guessed wrong, their Secret Santa won instead! The best part was the big reveal—seeing the care, thoughtfulness, and creativity that went into each handcrafted gift made it even more special.
Laughter, Bingo, and a Late Night to Remember
The rest of the evening was filled with endless rounds of Bingo, laughter, and joy. For over 90 minutes, we played game after game, celebrating small wins and big moments together.
What started as a simple gathering at 6 PM stretched all the way to 10 PM, because when you’re surrounded by good food, good company, and genuine love, time seems to stand still.
Even though we had to scale back our celebrations this year, one thing was clear—we still have each other. And that is worth more than anything money could buy.
This night was more than just a party. It was a reminder of the resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of the people who make this mission what it is. And for that, we are deeply grateful.
Here’s to another year of standing together, no matter what comes next.
What a wonderful evening honoring those that serve in a mighty way all year long. So much fun!
