Isaiah 58:10 and if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.
When I was a little girl I remember playing with my friends around the mission compound in St. Louis du Nord. I can picture those days–and a simpler time– like it was yesterday. To think what the mission has become since those days is beyond what anyone ever dreamed!
While we played in the dirt together, chasing and teasing each other, we were always different. It wasn’t because I was American and they were Haitian. It wasn’t because I had more things than they had. It actually had nothing to do with where we came from.
You see no matter what our backgrounds – we were still simply children playing together in the dirty courtyard! Our day times were very much the same. The difference happened when we went home. While we shared the daytime together – our night times couldn’t be any more different. I will never forget how terrified my Haitian friends were of the dark. As children we’ve probably all experienced that fear–but their fear was different. It was intense.
I wanted to understand what it was that frightened them so much. So at 9 years old – I went to my first voodoo service with my dad. I will never forget it. I continued to feed my curiosity and little by little I began to understand what it was about the dark that caused the children to tremble.
John 3:19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.
Ephesians 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
1 Thessalonians 5:5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
Having spent the majority of my life growing up in Haiti, I have come to understand and respect what the darkness is. Since moving to the Mole, I have spent many evenings sitting in the dark on top of my roof. I have heard the drums in the background and watched the large services right in front of my home.
There have been many times late at night that I would sit outside and spend some quiet time. From the distance I could see the street lamps light up around 7pm. In front of me the path was lit – but behind me the mountains were dark.
Haiti, a land dedicated to Satan, is all about darkness. The layers of darkness in the Mole are thick. The pleasant little sleepy town by day has many hidden secrets—many of which I am still discovering.
Daniel 2:22 He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.
God has laid on my heart that we are to stomp out the darkness in the Mole. You see the darkness can’t hide from the light.
John 12:46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
Acts 26:18 to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
While, I know in my heart from every day-to-day miracle that the presence of the Lord is here, the folks of the Mole have no point of reference or history to realize He exists.
God has set a blaze in my heart to back-up the darkness in the Mole! To set it on fire for him! To light up the entire town and force the darkness to find new residence!
2 Samuel 22:29 You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light.
Job 12:22 He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings utter darkness into the light.
Job 34:22 There is no deep shadow, no utter darkness, where evildoers can hide.
